WILDLIFE REHABILITATION INTERN
Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) is a registered charity. Our objectives are twofold:
i. Wildlife Rehabilitation: caring for and providing high quality medical treatment for sick, injured or orphaned wildlife and conditioning them for release back into the wild.
ii. Public Education: teaching the public about wildlife issues via the wildlife hotline, literature, media coverage and presentations to schools as well as community groups.
This internship at Toronto Wildlife Centre will provide on-the-job training in the daily essentials of operating a busy wildlife hospital and basic wildlife rehabilitation skills. Interns work full-time under the supervision of certified wildlife rehabilitators to perform animal husbandry duties and medical treatments. Some of the skills interns acquire include enclosure set-up and proper husbandry techniques, animal handling, tube feeding of mammals and birds, administering medication, performing lab work, data analysis, and various other procedures.
Requirements
All applicants must be self-motivated individuals with a sincere interest in working with wildlife and the ability to enthusiastically work long hours. Attention to detail, punctuality, initiative and a strong desire to learn are required. Interns are provided with a unique, friendly learning environment and opportunities to assist staff with lab work, examination and treatment procedures.
The internship is intense, physically demanding, fast-paced and repetitive, giving interns the opportunity to learn about many aspects of wildlife rehabilitation.
Responsibilities
- Preparing food/diets for wildlife
- Proper cleaning and disinfection of enclosures
- Administering medications and fluids
- Safe handling and restraint of wildlife while treatments are performed
- Assistwith intakeproceduresfor newpatients
- Cleaning and watering of kennels, cages, and aviaries
- Liftingandhaulingitemsupto40lbs.,includingtrashandrecycling
- Opportunity to work in rescue/release
Qualifications
- An independent learner able to quickly adapt to new and fast paced situations
- A motivated self-starter who is mature, responsible and reliable
- A hard worker that is not afraid of long hours
- Ability to work well under pressure and think on your feet
- Good communication skills and interpersonal skills
- A strong team player (interns will work extensively with centre volunteers)
- Physically fit - work is physically demanding and may involve heavy lifting of supplies or animals
- Basic knowledge of Ontario wildlife species an asset
- Demonstrated interest or education in wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, biology, ecology or zoology
- Minimum age of 19
- Volunteer experience in wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife management or animal care is beneficial but not required
- Must be driven, posses a sincere interest in working with wildlife, and able to handle a demanding workload and perform in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to speak, read and write English fluently
- Ability to do outdoor work in all types of weather
Duration/Hours
Sessions Available:
There are two 12 week sessions:
May 1st- July 31st
June 1st- Aug 31st
One 6 month position:
May 1st- October 31st
Hours of work: Approximately 40 hours per week, hours include evenings and weekends.
All internship positions are voluntary, no stipend or salary is offered, and accommodation is not provided.

Wildlife Medicine and Rehabilitation
Veterinary Technician Summer Externship
Program Description
This program is designed for veterinary technician students or graduates with a strong interest in wildlife medicine. The program will also provide an introduction to wildlife rehabilitation, including basic skills training, animal husbandry and diet preparation. The extern will gain knowledge in the handling and physical restraint of wildlife species, chemical immobilization, laboratory procedures and diagnostics, radiology, anaesthesia, emergency nursing, patient assessments and treatments, record-keeping and necropsy. In addition to spending time in the wildlife hospital, the extern (when appropriate) will gain experience in other areas of the centre including oil spill response, the rescue and release program, and the wildlife hotline.
Requirements
Candidates must be graduates of, or enrolled in, a recognized Veterinary Technician program
Proof of Tetanus vaccination; proof of a Rabies titre within a year of starting the program
Sessions Available
There are two 12 week sessions available:
May 1st to July 31st
June 1st to August 31st
Expectations
The extern will be expected to:
Work cooperatively and enthusiastically within the Toronto Wildlife Centre team.
Be familiar with the policies of Toronto Wildlife Centre.
Complete work within a five-day work week (approximate 40-60 hours).
Be respectful of the wildlife patients, working to minimize patient stress.
Be familiar with avian and reptile anatomy & physiology.
Research and review literature, relevant to current cases and projects.
Pursue a special interest case study or relevant research project.

Placements are available for students interested in learning about the medical care and rehabilitation of wild animals native to Ontario. Co-op students, interns, and externs have gained valuable experience while becoming important members of the Toronto Wildlife Centre team.
Program details and how to apply:
- TWC requires a minimum 100-hour commitment for any educational placement
- For high school placements, individual insurance is provided by the Board of Education
- Placements are based on student interests and educational level. Veterinary Technician students are typically placed with our Veterinary Technicians, Animal Care diploma students are typically placed with our Wildlife Care Staff, Veterinary students are typically placed with our Veterinary Staff.
