Toronto Wildlife
Centre (TWC) was opened on March 28th, 1993 by a group of
volunteers who were concerned by the fact that there was no
other organisation in the city dedicated specifically to helping
wildlife in need. A registered charity supported entirely by
donations, TWC has grown into Canada's busiest wildlife centre,
and the only organisation of its kind in Toronto.
-
TWC has admitted over 49,000 wild animals since opening, and in
recent years has experienced increases of up to 30% in both
patient admissions and calls to our Wildlife Hotline
-
In 2007 alone, over 5,600 wild animals were admitted for
medical care
-
TWC has cared for over 260
unique species of wild animals
-
Toronto Wildlife Centre regularly serves communities in the
region stretching from Peterborough, west to Hamilton, north to
Barrie, and beyond.
-
TWC’s Wildlife Hotline (which receives approximately 30,000
calls each year from concerned members of the public) is the
busiest of its kind in North America, and is considered a model
by organisations such as the Humane Society of the United
States.
-
TWC was the first wildlife centre of its kind in Canada to have
a veterinarian on staff and currently employs one of the most
experienced wildlife veterinarians in Canada
-
Toronto Wildlife Centre is the only wildlife centre in Ontario
with an Oil Spill Response Program
Toronto Wildlife
Centre is well-known in the community as a leader in our field. We
work in cooperation with agencies such as the Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources, the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre,
the Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Veterinary College, many branches of
the OSPCA, local animal services agencies, the municipal police and
the OPP, as well as other non profits such as the Owl Foundation,
the Canadian Peregrine Foundation, Animal Alliance of Canada and
FLAP (Fatal Light Awareness Program).
