Currently, it is not possible to simply go to vet school, and graduate as a wildlife veterinarian. A specialization in birds does exist, so one may work towards being a “Board Certified Avian Medicine Specialist”. Veterinarians interested in working with the diversity of wildlife such as that seen at TWC must gain the skills they need through continuing education opportunities such as:

  • Internships / externships in zoo / wildlife medicine
  • Residencies in zoo / wildlife medicine
  • Residencies in wildlife rehabilitation
  • Joining veterinary associations and going to conferences
  • Association of Avian Veterinarians
  • Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians
  • Canadian Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians
  • American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians
  • NWRA and IWRC
